A debtor vanishing is one of the trickiest and most common scenarios in both domestic and cross-border recovery. The real danger is not just that the money is temporarily unavailable — it is that you watch the limitation period slip away, evidence scatter, and assets move, until even the chance to sue is lost. Move through these six strategies early and in order.
Strategy 1: Fix the claim and the evidence now
- Organize all contracts, IOUs, purchase orders, account confirmations, payment records, and demand history; fix the principal and interest.
- Keep evidence of pre-disappearance communications (demands, promises to pay) so the debtor cannot later deny liability.

Strategy 4: Pursue related parties
- If the debtor is a company and shareholders have stripped capital or mixed the company's assets, assess piercing or shareholder liability.
